Bir çırpıda okudum. Derin izler bıraktı, bırakmakta; çünkü ilk kez bir kitabı bitirir bitirmez tekrar okumaya başladım. 15 yaşında otizmi olduğu söylenen ama kuvvetle muhtemel Asperger sendromu olan bir çocuğun ağzından yazılmış, çok naif, çok duygusal, çok samimi bir roman. Bu bir cinayet romanı. Makdül: köpek. Christopher, gece vakti komşularının köpeğini ölü bulur ve onu kimin öldürdüğünü bulmaya karar verir. Romanın kahramanı başka dedektiflere göre farklı özelliklere sahiptir. Asal sayıları sever, sakinleşmek için aklından matematik problemleri çözer. Evinden bir sokak öteye yalnız gitmemiştir ama astronot olmak ister. Yüzlerdeki affektleri tanıyamaz, yalan söyleyemez, yabancılarla konuşmaz, kalabalığa giremez, şakaları anlayamaz… İnsanlar kafasını karıştırır. Bir sırrı aydınlatmada pek istenecek özellikler olmasa da bu kez hikaye farklı gelişir. Work under capitalism is dull and therefore promotes the search for escape, but, because it is dulling, it leaves little energy for real escape - the demands of 'authentic' culture; instead, refuge is sought in forms such as popular music. The 'strain and boredom' of work leads men and women to the 'avoidance of effort' in their leisure time. Denied 'novelty' in their work time, and too exhausted for it in their leisure time, 'they crave a stimulant': popular music satisfies the craving via 'pseudo-individualization'. To consume it demands inattention and distraction, while its consumption produces in the consumer inattention and distraction. The approach is good on the economic dimensions but weak on the symbolic.Does the music industry determine the use value of the products which it produces? They try to but it is also very difficult to control the musical tastes of consumers. They can more easily control the exhange value (economic value) but it is the onsumers who make the use value (cultural value). "We may assume that people do not purchase the cultual artefacts in order to expose thmselves to bourgeois ideology... but to satisfy a variety of different wants which can only be guessed at in the absence of analysis and investigation." So that the power of the culture industries and the power of their influence are different. Do consumers who spend money also consume more and more ideology? Consumption is an active, creative and productie process, concerned with pleasure, identity and the production of meaning. Cause there are two economies embedded within eachother and running almost at th same time: the economy of use and the economy of exchange. Most part of the music industry live or die by their ability to respond to active consumption. The music industry is a medium through which hundreds of competing ideas flow. So efficient profit-making involves not the creation of 'new needs' and audiance 'manipulation' but, rather, the response to exisiting needs and audiance 'satisfaction'. They can not control the way how it is used and the meanings which it is given by those who use it.
